SLFP wants more women for UVA PC elections

Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Secretary General of the SLFP wants more women to contest in the upcoming UVA provincial council elections, according ot a report in the Lankadeepa today. This is good news.  The SLFP has shown the best record so far in terms of giving nominations to women in provincial elections. In the 2009 election UPFA, the coalition led by SLFP,  fielded 4 women candidates for a nomination rate of 10% for women in the UPFA slate.

In the 2004 elections were held in seven out of nine provinces and both the UNP and UFPA’s record was only 3.2 nd 2.9 respectively for a total slate of 412 candidates in each party. UPFA’s ‘ record in Gamapoha is certainly an improvement to to 2004. We hope the UPFA would do even better in the upcoming elections.

They won’t be sorry  if they do because nominated women have proven themselves equal to better than the men. In 2004 or 2009 the women from the two main political parties won at the same rate as men. Fro example if 3% or 10% of the candidates are women , 3% and 10% of the winners too ended up women in 2004 and 2009 , respectively.
