Quota for Women-Signature Campaign, A’pura
The third in a series of signature campaigns was held in A’pura on August 12, 2009

Hemail, Hemanthi and Anuruddhika at A'pura
with great success thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of Anuruddhika Dissanayake, sole female representative at the Anuradhapura Municipal Council. We are thankful to Samapth Perera, Member, Beruwela Urban Council and Himali Abeysuriya who travelled from Kandy to participate.

We reached our day’s target of 2000 signatures but more importantly we got a chance to talk to ordinary men and womne in Anuradhapura. While a few people shied away when they heard the word ‘political’ mentioned a large majority supported the idwa. The response of young men and women was 100% positive. They clearly wanted to see a change in the system of governance in this country.
Getting a few women in will not make a difference but getting at least 25% of women as candidates will cetainly make the game of politics change with less focus on ‘muscle’ and more focus on ’service’.
