Quota for Women-Signature Campaign, Nugegoda

Hon A H M Fowzie, Chandrika De Zoysa and Swarnalatha De Silva
‘The fourth in a series of signature campaigns was held in Nugegoda on tuesday, September 1st. Previous campaigns were held in Kandy, Galle, and Anuradhapura, respectively. The Nugegoda campaign was organized by Chandrika De Zoysa, member of Maharagama Urban Council
with the support of Swaranalatha De Silva, the mayor of Kotte.
Ashoka Lankathilaka, Member of the Western Provincial Council and Shanthini Konegahage, member of the Central Provincial Council too were there from beginning to end, talking to passers-by and getting their signatures. We are grateful to Hon A H M Fowzie, Minister and Ravi Karunanayake, MP for coming by to show their support and put their signatures to the petition.
We were able to collect over thousand signatures and talk with people of varied opinions and ideas. Most people were supportive of the initiative and promptly signed hoping that change would indeed take place. Of course, there were a hesitant few who were quite ‘uncomfortable’ with the word ‘politics’.
Almost all promoters had positive responses from our youth, which was very encouraging as this shows that they are awaiting transformation in our structure. With such optimistic minds, Sri Lanka would be able to reduce the gap in women’s presentation and achieve a more democratic system of government.
